We are a very young Open Educational Resources (OER) unit in the South Pacific on the beautiful island of Fiji. We are part of the Fiji Higher Education Commission (FHEC). The drive towards the adoption of OER was an initiative of the Director of the Commission, Mrs Salote Rabuka. In 2013, the FHEC recruited Mr Matai Tagicaki, a secondary school teacher who had skills in and a passion for OER to assist in the OER project. The project is fortunate to have the support of the UNESCO, the Commonwealth of Learning and the e-learning team of the University of the South Pacific which is based in the capital, Suva. The valuable advice and assistance in many ways rendered by these agencies in establishing OER in Fiji is acknowledged with sincere appreciation.
Early this year, 2016, the Hon. Minister for Education, Dr Mahendra Reddy, officially approved a national policy on OER. This policy will provide guidance and direction for all who will intend to use OER for learning purposes in whatever field. Mr Tagicaki who is now the ICT in Education Technologist is currently engaged in the proper establishment of the OER unit to enable the project to move and achieve its goals in the coming years.
